Complication

The appointment on Monday with the surgeon brought unwanted news.  It appears that there may be an infection in her socket.  There is a white spot, which means that the tissues are tearing apart.  This could be a sign of an infection.  The only piece that doesn't fit is that she does not have a lot of discharge right now, and if she had an infection, she likely would have a significant amount of discharge.  The treatment for this infection is yet another surgery.  A "quick" surgery, of just about fifteen minutes to clean up the socket and redo the stitches.  Of course added onto a fifteen minute surgery is two hours of preparation time at the hospital and eight hours of an empty stomach.

Dr. D appeared stumped with this complication.  He explained that he recently reviewed his cases from 2001 until now.  In that ten year period, he has had about one hundred cases of this happening.  As he is the primary surgeon for enucleations between LA and Chicago, he does thousands, and so one hundred cases is a small number.  Yet, the past three enucleations he has done, Anya included, have resulted in this infection.  In the end, he decided to have us try using an antibiotic ointment on her eye for the next two weeks.  We will go back to see him December 27 so that he can reassess what might be occurring.
