Roller coaster
Every appointment can feel a bit like a roller coaster - we think one thing is going to happen, and then the opposite happens. Or something completely unexpected happens. This last appointment, I went in thinking that we would soon be scheduling surgery. The white spot in Anya's socket had not gotten bigger, but it had not gotten smaller either. The tech that brought us into the exam room looked at Anya's chart and asked, "So, you have already called Children's to schedule surgery, right?" Um, no, we were told to wait. Next came the intern to look at Anya's eyes. Despite being quite friendly, she had a terrible bedside manner and said a number of things that made Will and I glance at each other with looks ranging from wonder to disgust. She left by saying that the exposure in Anya's socket was quite large and that surgery likely was imminent.
With all that going through my head, it was then shocking to hear Dr. D come in, take a look, and state that it looks good. He agreed that it hasn't gotten smaller, but the fact that it hasn't gotten worse, there is no pain, no discharge, or any other signs that something is wrong led him to decide no surgery for now. We just wait and keep watching it. It may slowly heal itself. Wonderful news.
But then back on the roller coaster - he went on to say that if it does end up getting worse, he will no longer do the quick surgery to clean up the exposure and redo the stitches. Instead, he will perform an extraction surgery where he would take the entire implant out and replace it with a different kind. It is, of course, a longer surgery, though still straightforward and easier than what she has already been through. Easy for him to say, eh? I think most things are easier than what she has already been through.
Next step, then, is the prosthesis - coming next week...

Bummer about the lousy resident. Is there a forum for you to pass on that kind of feedback so another family doesn't have to go through that? Looks like an orange and blue snow suit! Whats' Anya going to do with all the purple?
