Surgery avoided
Anya saw the new doctor last week and all went well. She does have a bit of an exposure. It is the culprit of the ooze in her eye, but it is not the reason for the eye turning. The doctor discussed surgery, but, in the end, we were able to put it off. We all think that it is likely she has had this exposure for awhile and she has learned to deal with the inconvenience of the discharge in her eye. In truth, this is mainly something that happens in the morning - think sleep in the eye only exponentially worse. The rest of the day it is usually fine with the exception of when she has a cold and then, just to add insult to injury, she gets more ooze just when she is feeling especially yucky.
She may still need surgery to correct the exposure in the future, but for now there is no risk in letting it stay how it is. Anya's preference is to not have surgery and this time she finally gets a say in the matter. To date, she has had six surgeries that she has had no choice in, but this time she can.
In the meantime, we will need to schedule another appointment with the ocularist - the person who makes her prosthesis. The turning of the eye is due to fit, not a medical problem. None of us are all too eager to head back that way, so it may be awhile before we do it. The turning doesn't bother Anya, it just looks a bit strange. To borrow the words of another Rb parent - it looks like a zombie eye. Maybe one day she'll have a killer halloween costume.
