Mediport

Neither Will or I has ever received anesthesia, so to have Anya "go to sleep" as the doctors call it for the third time in a week is a bit overwhelming. As with the past two times, Anya was amazing. The anesthesiologists flavor the gas by putting scented lip balm directly on the mask before she breaths into it. Anya loves lip balm, lip stick, and lip gloss, and she has been able to put the lip balm in her mask. It is nice to have something lighten the mood a bit in that dreary OR.
Today she received her mediport. It was a surgical procedure where they put a port under her skin that is connected by catheter to the vena cava. This will then be accessed to administer the chemo drugs as well as take blood when necessary. From what I am told, it makes things much easier on the patients, especially children, because they don't have to be poked so many times.
The surgeon came to talk to us before the procedure about what was going to happen. As always, Anya heard every word she said. As she described the stitches and where the port would go, Anya turned to me and said, "that doesn't sound good to me." It doesn't sound good to me either, but then not much has this past week.
